Review of El Topo (1970) by Burton — 21 Aug 2007
If you're expecting a western, spaghetti or otherwise from El Topo, don't bother. There is only about an hour that really revolves around the gunfighter plot line (which is about as unconventional as can be), It really is surreal, in every way.
The dialogue is limited, and broken. The exposition is entirely implied visually. The setting remains in a western motif the entire time, but there it could ultimately be set anywhere, it just happens to take place within the realm of the Western.
That said, it is enjoyable on every level, especially as an arresting, surreal work or pure art.
