Review of El Topo (1970) by Giffy G — 17 Sep 2008
I watched this movie because it started the midnight movie craze. Having seen other midnight movies, I honestly expected to watch a mediocre-to-pathetic movie that was more shocking than enjoyable. However, I was delighted to discover how wrong I was.
The shocks were definitely there--this movie is still shocking by today's standards--but so was plot and character. The movie even avoided being the serialized, picaresque nightmare I was afraid it was going to turn out to be with an amazing resolution.
The acting brought these bizarre characters into a realistic light that many actors would have been unable to do. A well made movie, all around.
