Review of El Topo (1970) by Tico P — 21 Oct 2008
Hallucinatory, mystical western. Stunningly shot and full of striking images, at times coming across as a twisted mix of Babycart and Blood Meridian (though it predates both). There's something a bit Herzogian going on too - or perhaps that's just because once Jodorowsky loses the beard he bears more than a passing resemblance to Klaus Kinski.
Personally, I've never been that big on symbolism - I'm a bit old school and quite like to have a clue what's going on, but there's no denying its warped beauty and singular vision.
