Review of El Topo (1970) by Jarrett M — 20 Mar 2012
El Topo is a film that I'm not quite sure of how I feel about it. It is certainly a 2 hour parade of nearly every conceivable oddity, and some unconceivable. It is an extravagent excersise in the surreal and is chock full of religious overtones.
It has a very strong art house feel to it, which some may find off-putting (amongst other qualities the film has). The effects are very cheesy, but they some how work with the tone of the overall film.
The performances are in the same vein as well, decent but they work for the movie. This is not a film I could overtly recommend to anyone. My best suggestion is if you're interested, give it a shot, but do a little research ahead of time so you have an idea of what you're getting yourself into.
If you're on the fence, proceed with caution. But there is nothing here will give you cause to try it if this isn't already on your radar. Definately an acquired taste.
