Review of El Topo (1970) by Mark A — 04 Sep 2008
Jodorowsky will draw you into his world, and destroy any preconceptions you have of common reality. This is the second film of what seems to be a trilogy of the examination of the human condition via the Tarot and Judao-Christian ideologies.
Out of the three (Fando Y Lis the Holy Mountain) El Topo is the most palatable. It is also the most popular as a midnight-movie cult classic. The american wild west period seems to be a great medium for examination of the human spirit.
This film lays down a path towards one man's revision of who he truly is, and although Jodorowsky can get preachy, he develops a great tale that is horrific and beautiful all at the same time.
