The 'prequel' to Desperado, this is a much better made film, with great scripting and excellent cinematography. Of course, it doesn't have Salma Hayek, but that's a mnior issue, Consuelo Gomez is equally easy on the eye (and actually, she appears in Desperado in a flashback too).
Incredible to think that Rodriguez made this on $7000. Just shows that having the big budget and big stars can be a distraction, here the relative unknowns mean that you can just enjoy the fun.
