Not quite the revelation one might expect, it's nonetheless clearly the confident work of a filmmaker who knew more or less what he was doing, even if he didn't yet have the means to do it full justice; amazing to think Rodriguez could go, in a little over a decade, from this to something as technically dazzling as "Sin City".
