With no money or effects, an action movie must have a good story. And no matter how simplistic and overdone it may be, El Mariachi is a good story. The scope of the leading man is an addictive, romantic blend of desolation and imagination.
It allows the audience to accompany him and experience the emotion of his battle. There is no explanation of his surrealistic origin, just like there is no explanation as to why the bad guy is so evil.
The sharp visual storytelling of dream-like cinematography and intense editing tells all that needs to be known. It's visceral, erotic, and exciting. A magnificent directorial debut.
