Review of El Mariachi (1993) by John W — 04 Jul 2008
The quintessential low budget popcorn movie, this film proves money isn't everything-- or anything, for that matter. Shot on a budget of just $7000, the story of an unemployed traveling musician mistaken for a mob killer is the stuff of pulp thrillers and is here elevated to high art through sheer passion of filmmaking.
Performances aren't exactly what I'd call nuanced, but this isn't a character movie, so it really doesn't matter. You certainly won't notice once the momentum really picks up. I hated on the sequels the first time I edited this review, but they've grown on me.
DESPERADO isn't the classic that this one is, but it sports some cool action scenes. ONCE UPON A TIME... is a fast-paced epic that falls short of the Sergio Leone greatness that it was going for, but it's still a great way to end what started out as an amateur action saga.
