Review of El Mariachi (1993) by Jim S — 06 Dec 2008
Hadn't seen this one in more than a decade, but it still holds up. I actually think I liked it more now than I did then. It's a great "case of mistaken identity" piece that moves at a fantastic pace, and it falls into that rare category of being an action movie about a hero trying to avoid the action.
Rodriguez' style became a good deal more comic-booky after this, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. This film had glimpses of what his style would develop into, and I honestly think I liked that it didn't embrace it as fully as his later films did.
