Review of El Mariachi (1993) by Nikolaj Z — 06 Jul 2009
For a home movie, it's pretty damn kool. Excellent camera work and editing make this film very enjoyable.
"Without her, I have no love. But with the dog and the weapons, I am prepared for the future.".
Going into this the second time aware that it's the directors amateur-debut film set the right frame of mind for my viewing pleasure; during my preliminary showing, several years ago, I was expecting something on par with "Desperado" in terms of budget. This is easily one of the best home-made movies I've ever seen; and Columbia Pictures seemed to agree. There are very few low budget films (that I know of) that have enough charm to appeal to its viewers. If I were a teacher in a film class, this would be on my list of required viewing material (right before "Crank").
