Review of El Mariachi (1993) by Jack B — 14 Mar 2011
El Mariachi (1992).
A fantastic debut film from Robert Rodriguez, starring Carlos Gallardo as the title character who must avoid getting killed by gang who have mistaken him for a criminal.
I enjoyed every minute of El Mariachi because how much fun it is to watch and because it made on a budget of $7,000 dollars and became a very successful film for Robert Rodriguez.
It's one of the films that has influence me to make films because on a budget on $7,000 dollars and then managing to get it distributed by Columbia Pictures means nothing is impossible, the wierd twist of fate for Robert Rodriguez was that the intended market of the film which was the Mexico Home Market did not like the film and did not want to release it but luckily Columbia Pictures liked the film so much that they distributed it.
I would recommend that you watch the film with Robert Rodriguez commentary track as it is very insightful on how he made a film on a $7,000 and he also gives people who want to become directors like me some great tips on how he made this film work and what techniques he used to keep the budget down.
