Review of El Dorado (1966) by Brett B — 29 Dec 2013
Though it's essentially a retread of RIO BRAVO, I'd argue that this Howard Hawks western perfects that formula, and it's incredibly entertaining, particularly in the way it continuously subverts your expectations of where it's going.
.. before ultimately going there anyway, and in very satisfying fashion. The movie looks gorgeous (as most westerns of the 1950s and 1960s tend to do; it's perhaps the most photogenic genre there is), and the interplay between Wayne, Caan, and Mitchum is first-rate and snappy, courtesy of Brackett's screenplay.
