Review of El Cid (1961) by Paul C — 21 Jun 2009
Martin Scorsese has deemed this film "one of the greatest epic films ever made," but I may have to disagree with that statement. As beautifully shot and colorful as it is, this epic has no real core.
The main point is lost in translation as the story jumbles between love and politics and action, and at 3 hours for that matter. Charlton Heston spurts lines that further define the stereotypical male while Sophia Loren looks out with her insanely catchy eyes.
It's certainly well-made and well-intended, but "El Cid" is a long exercise in how to not make an epic movie. Scorsese will have to keep this one for himself.
