Review of El Cantante (2006) by Antonio A — 31 Aug 2007
As Puerto Rican who grew up listening to Hector Lavoe whenever my old man played his record collection, I was instilled with a profound appreciation and admiration for mister Lavoe as an artist and a fellow country man. That is why I was SO disappointed after seeing this film when it premiere in Puerto Rico. The film is in absolutely NO way the biographical tribute the two protagonists claimed, since is mainly focused in the battle with drug addiction that Lavoe endure. The result is a sensationalists and melodramatic fallacy that doesn't explore the other aspects in the live of this great man.
For those of us in Puerto Rico who through out our lives have watched the different live/recorded presentations, listen to his records, read the different books and news papers articles that were written about mister Hector Lavoe; is really sad to see how the two protagonists who called theme selfs Puerto Ricans in no way do justice to the musical and cultural legacy of one of our nations first international icons.
