Review of Einstein and Eddington (2008) by Kong M — 31 Jan 2009
Its a long time since A Beautiful Mind that another biographic movie of scientist is made. And this movie, in fact is about 2 scientists, is one hell of a brilliant masterpiece! It is I would say better than Benjamin Button in many ways.
The inclusion of Eddington is a good choice by the director. He could have made just a movie about Einstein, but the role of Eddington only added different point of view but also show how, in real life, scientists collaborate to achieve a common goal. He has made this movie a true testimony (finally there is one!) for scientists and science in general .
It is a well-made period movie. The emotional and social impacts ( of the war and the transitions of the era) upon the characters are expressed accordingly. Hence, this movie manages to balance the science side and the human side of the lives of both einstein and eddington.
In fact it is the first movie about scientists that makes the subject look pretty human, and a character than the audience could actually relate to -- the first movie about scientists that I would regard as wholesome. (even Hopkins portrayed in A Beautiful Mind was too mad, and seemed too distant...because movies like that seem to portray the scientists as too engrossed in their own work, oblivious to the reality in their surroundings)) This is the reason y I gave it 4 stars...it sets a new standard to other filmmakers who intend to make another movie on scientists.
