Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Tor M — 29 Dec 2018
Bo Burnham's debut and he comes in with a waking fly kick to the faces of people outside our new younger generation.
Kayla is in the eighth grade. She is soon of to high school and she looks up to everyone that's cool. She is not cool herself. Living with her father, handling acne, boy issues and the fact that she really have no true friends. She tries hard to be the coolest. Posts videos on YouTube and everything. Throwing up posts on Instagram and sling in those cool lines when she have small chats with the most popular kids at school.
This is a very realistic view on many young girls growing up today. The struggle is hard and so very true. The acting is great, the story is fittingly typical and it has some very cringy moments that's hard to watch. I believe most people can relate to many things here and think back on times that was both hard and fun, and here we se the hardest side of growing up. The pressure today are much greater than it used to be. Gadgets, clicks, looks and success is everything.
I found this film hard to watch, even if it's kind of funny at times, it's not giving you laughs, just streams of pettiness or even feelings of lust to pull your hoodie over your head.
Not spectacular, exctiting, original or spellbinding at all, but an important film and something to see if you are twelve or thirty or having kids - either young or old.
8 out of 10 bananas.
