Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Jason W — 29 Sep 2018
Cut out a couple of cringey scenes here and there and then there's honestly not a lot wrong with Bo Burnham's first feature. There are similarities between Ladybird in the way humor has been so well integrated into the story, and like Boyhood, there's no particular climax, or plot twist to the script, but instead a very genuine portrayal of adolescence.
Having just graduated eighth grade, Elsie Fisher is fresh from the fight, and dazzles with an amazing performance, bringing substance and depth to her character. Whilst I feel this movie will resonate most with younger years, there's an aspect of the film that we all can relate to.
The script is near flawless, well edited, good camerawork, Eighth Grade is the perfect example of how to do a coming of age film in the modern digital era.
