Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Jeff C — 11 Aug 2018
I just returned from the theater where I saw "Eighth Grade". While I admit it isn't for everyone, I think a considerable percentage of typical movie-going types will easily relate to the trials and tribulations of Kayla Day. The *disconnect* between Kayla and her father was perhaps way too typical of 2018 school kids and quite unfortunate. It seemed that he could have helped a few more of Kayla's angst-filled moments/days with a well-meant and loving word IF even he had the 'avenue' to offer same. (she's forever connected to her phone or laptop and mostly disengaged from what little 'family' is evident in the movie).
I watched in the company of young adult women seated nearby, and they provided a live 'laugh track' with authentic reactions to each little pitfall as it came up.
The rest of the movie was a solid build-up to the occasional parts where things DID go the right way for eighth-grader Kayla.
Her visit to high school to 'shadow' a high school student for a day was surprisingly refreshing, and the personality/spirit utilized to show Kayla around exuded a comforting vibe of 'acceptance' .
There were heart-felt moments when 'dad' and Kayla sat in the back yard as Kayla burned some of her memories from 2 3/4 years prior. 'Dad' was generally cooperative when needed, yet he was kinda goofy, and I fear what today's 8th-graders must feel about their fathers.
I'm confident I would see "Eighth Grade" for the first time, again, IF I could know then what I know now while making the choice to see it.
I just... can't place an "Active School Shooter" drill in my own memories of Rumours-era eighth grade - THANKfully...
Generally I'd say "two thumbs up" about "Eighth Grade", while cautioning eager viewers to NOT *drag* others to the cinema for it if the instincts of those others are telling them they wouldn't be interested.
