Review of Eighth Grade (2018) by Ayla S — 04 Aug 2018
An adult's depiction of the life of a teenager in the era of technology. I'm so saddened that this is what people think middle schoolers are truly like. I waited an hour for the movie to start, but it never seemed to have a developing plot. Very stereotypical representations- there is literally a scene where the main character tries to converse with two popular girls from her class and they spend the whole time looking down at their phones. This does not happen in real life, and if it does, why are we making a movie about it instead of parents teaching their kids respect? Most of the movie was spent watching the reactions of the main character to the scenes happening instead of actually showing the scenes.
How could this movie possibly show the truth about a certain age and era if it is restricted from the audience that it is actually about?
Maybe this was just not my cup of tea, but I believe that there are much more insightful and truthful looks into teenage life that does not minimalize our experiences to having low confidence, being insecure, and being stuck on social media.
