Review of Eight Men Out (1988) by Jeremy B — 13 Jan 2009
A brilliant movie about the tangled relationship between sports and commerce and how even the most spectacular talents will inevitably be cheapened and co-opted by the powers that be. John Sayles impressively recreates the look and feel of early twentieth century Chicago on a shoe-string budget and stages some of the most authentic and exciting baseball games you are ever likely to see.
His excellent script also gives quirky character actors like David Strathairn, D.B. Sweeney Clifton James, Michael Lerner, John Mahoney, Gordon Clapp and John Anderson a chance to turn in some of the finest work of their respective careers.
