Review of Eight Men Out (1988) by Wu C — 05 Nov 2010
I've tried to like this movie; Sayles does a yeoman job with material that's more complicated than most people realize. He does even better work playing Ring Lardner, and I'd rather have watched that movie -- just him and Studs Terkel making bitchy comments the whole time while filling out their scorecards.
As it is, some schmaltzy (and/or long disproven) stuff is left in, unwisely -- "Say it ain't so, Joe"; the Hoboken coda -- and much of the acting is sepia-cured ham, except for Mahoney (very good, thanks to the rewriting of history for the part) and Strathairn (mope-a-thon).
