Review of Eight Legged Freaks (2002) by Stuart K — 24 Mar 2011
Produced by Roland Emmerich, this is an enjoyable romp which harks back to the B-Movie sci-fi's and horrors of the 1950's. It's good to see a film of this kind doing the rounds again. It's cheesy, and it knows it, it's CGI is a little ropey, but it knows that.
That gives the film a charm of it's own. Set in the town of Prosperity, Arizona. It starts with a barrel of toxic waste ending up in a reservoir, from near the reservoir, local spider farmer Joshua (Tom Noonan) collects crickets to feed to his spiders, however the crickets have been in contact with the contaminated water, so guess what happens when the spiders ingest it?? Yep, you've guessed it.
Meanwhile, Chris McCormick (David Arquette), returns to town after 10 years away, to oppose plans to relocate the town, as Chris' father had been searching for gold before he passed away. Chris also starts a romance with local sheriff Sam Parker (Kari WÃ 1/4hrer).
But, soon the town has a lot more to worry about than relocating, as the spiders have been growing in numbers and size and making random attacks around the town. It is very silly indeed, but it has some funny moments.
Essentially, it comes across as something like Piranha 3D, without the sex and nudity, or the 3D. Despite the hype, success was limited.
