Review of Eight Below (2006) by Sky S — 06 Aug 2009
I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie when my 8 year old picked it for our Friday family movie night. He'd already watched it twice this week, so it's certainly a hit with the target audience.
While I don't want to watch it three times this week, I did enjoy it. It is dreadfully sad in parts. The story of eight dogs battling to survive an antarctic winter. I cried more than I would have expected, but perhaps that was the half bottle of fine Tasmanian bubbly.
Very beautiful in parts of course, also a bit implausible in parts as with most kids movies (or adult ones). Interesting to see that it is essentially an adaptation of a 1983 Japanese movie that recounts a story of 15 dogs left to winter in Antarctica in 1958.
