Review of Egg (2007) by Eric R — 16 Feb 2011
A man who works in a big city learns of his mothers death. He heads home to the small town where he is from for his mothers funeral. While only intending to stay a day, he ends up staying longer after learning from his mother's cartaker that his mother wanted to sacrifice a ram before her death.
Visually, Yumuta is impressive. It uses massive wide shots to show us the countryside, and has some very interesting framing. The problem for me is that I had trouble understanding what the point of it all was.
I imagine the director was trying to make a statement about one returning to where they are from, but being confronted by the fact that a place that was so familiar at one time, is barely recognizable anymore.
The character clearly has some form or remorse towards the end of the film for being so distant but it never resonated with me emotionally. The director has said that he only makes films for "the Metaphysical and philosophical endeavor.
" which I admire, but I didn't really get much out of this besides the beautiful visuals.
