Review of Edward Scissorhands (1990) by Kendall I — 01 Oct 2012
This is right up there next to Beetlejuice in my book.
PLOT:Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp) is the creation of an inventor (Vincent Price) who died before he was able to give his creation hands, so he just used scissors. His hidden life is turned upside down when Avon saleswoman, Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) finds him upon selling the cosmetics. She takes him back to her house and accepts him into the family trying to give him a normal life, but Edward has a creative flair and vision that enthralls everyone in the neighborhood. If used wrong, people could get hurt. Not to mention his try to appeal love to daughter-of-Peg, Kim Boggs (Winona Ryder). It is a very unique plot executed in the best way it possibly could.
ACTING:Very top-notch. Depp shined in this film more than any otehr Burton film he's ever done. Ryder and Weist were very good as well as Anthony Michael-Hall as Jim, Alan Arkin as Bill Boggs, and Kathy Baker as Joyce Monroe.
SCORE:Very excellent. It has the classic Danny Elfman flair each other Burton movie he scores does.
EFFECTS:There isn't very many effects, but of what there is they are very vivid-this includes set design.
OTHER CONTENT:What makes this film more than meets the eye is its hidden message. This is a basic picture of life. You have your bland fakes (Joyce and her crew) all around the neighborhood and one family who just tries to fit in and make it by (the Boggs). Amongst the normal world is the one who stands out and puts his unpredictable and sometimes disliked flair into it (Edward Scissorhands). I appreciate this realism because I am and Edward Scissorhands. I am the one who doesn't fit in. But this isn't about me, it's about a great film. I also appreciated how differnt this film truly tries to be. Burton always strives for different, and this film shows greatly.
OVERALL, an epic film with a unique plot, top-notch acting, very excellent score, vivid effects, glorious hidden realism, and the Burton flair of being different.
