Review of Edward Scissorhands (1990) by Danny R — 06 Oct 2015
Tim Burton's delightfully moving comic fable concerning an old inventor's greatest creation, an artificial young man named Edward, played superbly by Johnny Depp, in one of his most compelling performances, although Edward is gentle and posses an irresistible charm, he is not perfect for the inventor who is wonderfully played by the late great horror veteran actor Vincent Price, has given him a pair of enormous sharp scissors for hands, until he can complete a pair of human hands for Edward.
But the Inventor's sudden death leaves Edward unfinished. Edward lives alone for years in the inventor's massive castle, until one day a kind Avon lady, amusingly played by Dianne Wiest discovers Edward and takes him home to live with her quirky family.
Thus begins Edward's fantastical adventures in a small, pastel Suburbia. Astute direction by Tim Burton, with superlative supporting performances by Winona Ryder, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Alan Arkin, Conchata Ferrell, and Robert Oliveri.
Amazing production design by Bo Welch, brilliant Oscar nominated Makeup by the late great Stan Winston and Ve Neill. A great original score by Danny Elfman, and exquisite cinematography by Stefan Czapsky.
A poetic beautifully haunting fantasy and a Burton classic. Highly Recommended.
