Review of Edward Scissorhands (1990) by Adam S — 01 Nov 2013
Let me start by saying that this doesn't rank very high in my list of favourite Tim Burton movies, or Johnny Depp movies.
The visuals are stunning. The contrast between the happy, friendly town and the dark, gothic castle is iconic. The acting from Depp is superb, as well as Winona Ryder, Alan Arkin and Vincent Price.
But much of the movie is bogged down in, well, boring scenes. We got the idea that Edward is decent at scupting things (hair, dogs, trees, etc), I don't want to see Edward doing chores for every woman in the neighborhood. I see where Burton is coming from, but it doesn't class, in my mind, as entertainment.
Other bits of the film, such as the break-in, the climax, and any scene with Vincent Price in it, are fantastic. But it doesn't hold this movie together to stand it on it's lofty pedestal.
Of course, I had to study it for English class. That always ruins the experience somewhat.
