Review of EDtv (1999) by Giselle W — 21 Dec 2008
A decent, fairly predictable, light-hearted comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously, which allows for some realistic moments to happen between the characters. There are a bunch of cliches present and a few of the cast members, such as Dennis Hopper and Elizabeth Hurley, are wasted in their glorified cameos.
There are no real standouts with everyone basically playing themselves except Woody Harrelson, who is such a tremendous douchebag for most of the film, it makes it that much easier to like Matthew McConaughey (although, the two of them could totally be brothers so good casting there).
The same thing happens with Ellen DeGeneres being infinitely more likable just cause Rob Reiner is such an asshole. I also dug Adam Goldberg in his bit part. Some of the cutaways to random people watching the show were more annoying than funny but that could be said for most of the humour in this movie.
It was still a decent watch and I smiled a couple of times but with the amount of talent involved, you can't help but be disappointed that this wasn't as good as it could've been.
