Review of Edge of Tomorrow (2014) by Another V — 05 Dec 2015
The Edge of Tomorrow is an action packed sci fi thriller with a well thought out storyline. The fast-paced action is balanced with perfect suspense.
Just like in the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, Tom Cruise's character Major William Cage gets to wake up to the same day over and over again. The reason? Humans are fighting an alien species which has a special ability to reset time. This ability is used by the aliens to control the outcome of war. Apparently, they want our planet.
Just before he dies in battle (the first time), Cage is splattered with the blood of a certain type of alien involved in time reset. This transfers the alien's do-over ability to him.
The survival of the human race is at stake, and every time Cage dies--which is repeatedly-- he gets to try to do it all over again, better. He soon teams up with a superfighter named Rita, who similarly had but lost the ability he now has. She shares what she learned from her own experiences, which gives him an edge.
How many different ways can you die fighting an alien? Apparently, many. Along the way, Cage gets to know everyone in his circle fairly well, including Rita. He gets to see over and over again, how people as well as aliens react and behave, and he gets better and better at using this knowledge to his advantage.
If Cage does not succeed, the human race will likely go extinct. He cannot fail. Good thing he gets to keep trying.
If done right, I would love to see a sequel.
