Review of Edge of Tomorrow (2014) by Ashton L — 28 Jun 2017
Ground hog day meets sci-fyi action as Tom Cruise repeats essentially a failed version of alien D-Day. A premise like this may sound like some sort of weird B-rated fan film, but Edge of Tomorrow, or All You Need Is Kill, or Live Die Repeat, whatever you wanna call it, is an incredibly enjoyable action film that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
It reminded me of a video game in many aspects which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The way Tom Cruise's character constantly died over and over to the same aliens while slowly figuring out what to do and how to do it to advance further and further in the plot reminded me a lot of retro rouge-lite titles like Ninja Gaiden or like modern titles like Dark Souls.
The characters of the movie aren't really as fleshed out as I'd like them to be, the most fleshed of the characters was Emily Blunt's character and even that is only given through small bits and pieces.
It's enough for me to not care about the eventual forced romance and for me to care less about the fate of the other side characters, but it is not enough to drag the film down too low. The action, creative idea, brilliant execution, and interesting alien designs help push this movie up as one of the most creative action movies in recent years.
