Review of Edge of Darkness (2010) by André L — 14 Apr 2011
When saying that the film contains emotional distress, they are not lying. From the beginning, you can tell that this is going to be a very tough watch. The way the material is explored is unflinching and brave.
Mel Gibson has an impressive comeback as the father on a mission avenging his daughter's death. Throughout, he acts greatly and we see him morph fully into the character. Ray Winstone is also rather good and plays a very likeable character.
His own subplot that is in the film is interesting. There are occasional moments of pure excitement, particularly a scene where Gibson walks directly towards an oncoming vehicle and shoots at it continuously.
It is top moviemaking when the action is playing out full blast. The film is shockingly violent, brutal and depressing. It is only worth a watch for the action scenes and Gibson. However, when there is no action on the screen, the film seems overlong and the story doesn't seem to hold itself up to be interesting enough for the viewer.
You may trail off, but it is worth a watch.
