Review of Edge of Darkness (1943) by Chris H — 14 Nov 2013
Mel Gibson post the "controversy years" is a far more interesting actor than he has been for 20 years. It's because you know he's only ever potentially a few moments away from losing his mind at any given point that makes him a fascinating character on and off screen.
Hence, two of his more recent films have him portraying characters with fragile emotional and mental states and it works. He's like a frayed around the edges Charles Bronson here. Where he is let down is by a plot that quickly descends into the ridiculous - in particular the closing moments where it turns into a how many people can get shot and still kind of lurch around-fest.
Still, pretty solid for the most part.
