Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Brian P — 12 Sep 2009
Yuppies beware, for below you are tribes of lower class bogun, hoodlum, disaffected, disturbed, disassociated, media brain-washed, pathologically cold and brainless youth, who are so ready to give you a comeuppance if you stray to close.
Is this the message this film wishes to convey?...to portray a middle-class anxiety?...where a warm, fuzzy, and cosy middleclass world is under threat from disgruntled plebs and their grubby little offspring.
This film is a snortingly bourgeois 'Deliverance' style revenge fantasy, where our plucky pair are chased and tortured by a new kind of monster. No not Zombies this time, but ordinary thuggish adolescents, who can be seen in anybodies town, riding their BMX's, whilst terrorising and vandalising neighbourhoods.
The film is saved a little by its downer ending, which hits the right note, and by some good peformances. But I was'nt sold by this movie, with it's wanting to have it both ways. i.e. to earn bucks by cheap gory 'thrills' and at the same time play with 'serious' problems in society' themes.
Well enough done though...so yeah check it out.
