Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Richard C — 24 Oct 2010
It can leave you with a strong sense of explosive hatred, and I'm still trying to shake that off as I type this. It's mostly a chase and suspense film with sociopathic / morally apathetic youths pissing on a tender victimized couple's personal space.
Its generic horror cues are reworked to put terror on teenagers' faces instead of an anonymous adult killer, so you'll be sweating through a crippled protagonist attempting to escape the teen villains one way or another.
Another aspect that is unusual here is the British critique: British films aren't normally associated with the torture porn stuff, and you don't stereotypically expect British societies to be so backwards.
Given the film in any other context than its British one, it would've been mediocre in my eyes, albeit still pessimistic and sadistic.
