Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Chris M — 04 Nov 2010
I'm not with the general masses in rating this movie 3 stars or higher. I went in with expectations higher based on the higher ratings and found myself disappointed and very annoyed ... annoyed because of all the stupid and moronic people portrayed in horror movies, this couple has to be the worst.
The boyfriend is by far the more stupid of the two, kicking the whole thing off by having to be "big man on campus" and showing those ruffians who's the boss, despite his girlfiriend's pleas to just let it go and move to another camp site.
And it goes downhill from there. My reaction to these people being terrorized by a group of nerdy looking juvenile delinquents was the same when I saw dolls, puppets, and the like attacking human beings in other equally awful movies .
.. uhhh, hello? They're just (insert - kids / dolls / puppets, etc.) -- kick their ass now! The girlfriend at least had some moxie, but the guy just blundered around from one stupid scenario to the next, apparently operating without a brain whatsoever.
In a movie like this, connection with the main characters is critical for it to be successful. As opposed to sympathizing with them, I found myself telling the teens to just hurry up, kill them, and get it over with so I could shut the damn TV off.
I personally consider it a testament to my endurance given that I actually made it to the end without ending their (and MY) misery by pressing the "stop" button on my remote.
