Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Jason K — 20 May 2010
Really intense Brit horror film which plays on the whole "asbo" culture as scaremongered in the media these days. Fassbender and Reilly are a young London couple who are increasingly harassed by a group of teenagers at a midlands beauty spot, soon to be "Eden Lake" housing development.
Things turn nasty, obviously, and the film goes into classic horro/survival mode with some queasy violent scenes. Like all decent genre films its not only done with considerable skill, along with powerful acting turns all round, but with some degree of complexity.
The viewpoint of the film is relatively ambivalent, making the bleak ending hard to stomach. I usually take some offence to films that offer no hope or redemption, but I have to admit this is done with so much intensity and with one foot in a scarily credible reality that I was one over.
Felt like shit afterwards, but thats probably testament to the films power.
