Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Klavs P — 01 Nov 2010
Steve(Michael Fassbender)takes his girlfriend Jenny(Kelly Reilly)on a romantic trip to the countryside, planning to propose to her. They set up camp by a lake, that's soon to be drained and used for building development. Situated deep in a woodland area, they expect serenity, beauty, and romance.Instead they are interrupted by a local gang of teenagers, who's seems bent on ruining their weekend. When Steve accidentally kills the dog of the gang leader, it sets in motion a violent reaction, that soon descends into torture and death.
The movie goes some way in describing why the gang act the way they do,with violence in their homes as one cause. But the lack of humanity displayed, in particular by the leader, made me feel like I was watching predatory animals, rather than young kids loosing their way. This movie was a truly harrowing experience, perhaps mostly because it felt so realistic."Eden Lake" left the impression that this could happen to me too.
The acting in this movie is superb, and everyone is thoroughly convincing here. The directors pacing of the movie and the editing also works very well.
This movie made me feel sick, and I think it will stay with me for a long time.
