Review of Eden Lake (2008) by Joellemm — 05 Oct 2016
The progression of the female lead is impressive, regarding both character and appearance. There are a variety of tense and shocking moments. The film does, however, rely on the viewers fear of Northern youths for its fear factor.
When younger, I was scared of youths like those depicted in the film (chavs), and from personal experience, there was always an alpha male whom everyone sucked up to. Only in packs are they dangerous (this is genuinely the case).
This film's use of them as the villains, may be argued as stereotyping, but it could also be seen as depicting the extreme perception people genuinely do have. Using this in the context of a horror is brilliant, because for some (like a younger me), it is a real life fear.
Overall though, the film offers little beyond this, and also includes some of the most baffling decisions to be made by characters. It leads to a more frustrating, rather than scary experience.
