Review of Eddie the Eagle (2016) by Orlando O — 28 Feb 2016
Eddie the Eagle is a fun, heartwarming, inspired feel good drama film about a kid and his dream of being an Olympian. The film does take place in the 1980s and does have fun with it and have a 80s music score which works really well in the film.
The film introduces Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton), a young teen, who is inspired and dreams about being in the Olympics. He always struggled with playing sports and being an athlete as a kid. Even, the Olympics coach rejects Eddieâ(TM)s commitment in training and participating as a ski jumper.
Only, Bronson (Hugh Jackman) an ex ski jumper, is trying to prepare Eddie for the Olympics ski jumping event. Even, Eddieâ(TM)s father was not always supportive with his desire to be in the Olympics.
For a typical biographical drama film, there are those roadblocks and struggles in place for Eddie trying to prevent him from reaching his goal. Eddie is a committed strong guy that would not let a few injuries from bad landings as he ski jumped stop him.
When Bronson tries to convince Eddie to hold out on ski jumping for four years, so he can try to train him for the 90m jumping event. Eddieâ(TM)s main motivation was not to reach 1st place, but to be the first best british ski jumper.
The film is predictable, but the 80â(TM)s music score, inspirational direction, and Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackmanâ(TM)s entertaining performance was well worth it. The film does have a small sub plot, that shows Bronsonâ(TM)s past mistake in the Olympics that caused him and his trainer Warren Sharp (Christopher Walken) to drift apart.
It does feel like the scene as Warren comes across Bronson in the end, as a forgiving meet up was forced. Christopher Walken does have a small amount of screen time, and when he was there, his scenes felt forced in the sub plot.
Eddie the Eagle is surprisingly a good drama film, it has its sweet charming moments seeing Eddieâ(TM)s inspired to follow his dreams, it has those conflicts that try to sabotage Eddie from ski jumping, and Eddieâ(TM)s mother and Bronson stood by his side, even after his failed attempts.
He never gives up on his dreams.
