The comparisons to "Rudy" will be unavoidable, but no underdog athlete movie can ever escape that comparison. Egerton gives a heartwarming performance that allows you to believe that sincerity and determination are really all you need to be an Olympian (besides, you know, actual skill).
Hugh Jackman, playing charming yet grizzled, is the voice of authority that lends this story an anchor. The importance of his character cannot be understated: sincerity and determination can only get you so far, but to achieve your dreams, you are going to need help.
