Review of Eddie the Eagle (2016) by Axel H — 30 Mar 2016
Eddie The Eagle tells the true story of athlete Eddie Edwards who took part in the 1988 Winter Olympics doing ski jumping for Great Britain. This film is produced by Matthew Vaughn, directed by Dexter Fletcher and stars Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman.
Eddie The Eagle is a great feel good family comedy that is incredibly charming and put a big smile on my face. I really enjoyed Eddie The Eagle and in my opinion this film is really good. Taron Egerton plays Eddie Edwards and he's great.
He's really exploded this past year or so and he gives another great performance here. Eddie is very likeable and funny and for a guy who could have gotten very unlikeable at the end of this film, I liked Eddie all the way through.
Hugh Jackman's character is quite cliche but he's still great and yet again is very likeable. Egerton and Jackman both had great chemistry and both gave great peformances, they were the best aspect of the film.
This movie is full of great supporting actors who all give very good performances, the supportin cast is huge including Keith Allen, Jo Hartley, Tim Mclnnerny, Christopher Walken and Jim Broadbent. The supporting cast are all great here especially Keith Allen who is always fantastic.
This film is very well directed, there are lots of funny moments but there are also some very tense moments, like the ski jumps at the ending. This film is very funny especially this scene where Jackman is teaching Eddie that doing a ski jump is like having sex, that was very funny.
This movie is just a lot of fun and I really enjoyed it. As for problems I have a few. Also some of the cgi looks very bad. The green screen whenever someone does a ski jump looks very questionable. At couple points when a character will mess up and smash into the snow the cgi looks very rubbery and took me out of the film.
While Eddie The Eagle is far from the best sports movies and is a bit forgettable and riddled with sports movie cliches, I had so much fun watching this film. It's great for families and while not perfect it's very entertaining.
B+.
