Review of Eddie the Eagle (2016) by Cinemadame . — 12 May 2016
Sports and underdog movies often follow the same template. Predictable drama and many training montages all leading to a stand up and cheer climax. Eddie the Eagle fails to make a case for difference. Taron Egerton's fantastic performance enliven a man who is likable but perhaps blindly misguided to his motives for wanting to be an Olympic.
The film follows a well-worn path, but it has some nice moments along the way, mostly being provided by Hugh Jackman's no nonsense coach of sorts. The finale is suitably heartwarming and exciting and if the family is in the mood for this kind of thing, it could be a very satisfying watch.
Oh and Christopher Walken feels weirdly out of place. Just don't expect a film that will change what you know about such movies. Rating: 63.
