Review of Eddie Murphy: Delirious (1983) by Ryan V — 11 Dec 2012
Often considered a peak of Eddie Murphy's career, Delirious finds the young comic delivering an hour of risque stand-up. There are a couple of tamer gags involving family life and childhood obsessions with ice cream trucks, but the vast majority of the humor is very blue.
Modern audiences may be turned off by how Murphy addresses race and homosexuality, but it's difficult to take most of his clowning all that seriously. While the material doesn't match sets recorded by Richard Pryor or George Carlin at roughly the same time, Delirious still has a solid amount of funny content and entertaining showmanship.
It's worth a viewing for anyone interested in the medium of stand-up comedy.
