Review of Eddie (1996) by David A — 18 Apr 2010
(from The Watermark 06/08/96).
Goldberg plays Eddie (short for Edwina), a die-hard New York Knicks fan. When the team is bought by a Texan tycoon (Langella), the current manager walks, and Langella seizes a golden opportunity: make Goldberg the coach and watch the publicity fly about the first female NBA coach. And, of course, maybe she might help the team. And guess what? She does! Back in Sister Act mode, Whoopi pinpoints all of the players' weak spots and helps them fix their personal lives, and their playing. Yes, it's formulaic, and gets hokey at the end, but the overall film is a lot of fun and entertains nonetheless. Whoopi is in top form, and most importantly, the movie doesn't get bogged down with the technicalities of the sport. (Hey, if I could follow it, anyone can.) The team is played by actual NBA players, who are surprisingly good at acting. The best points of the film are when Whoopi chews them out for being too caught up in their endorsements, album deals, and general pomposity. The underlying message is that the game itself and the community pride it ignites is what's truly important. Queer Quotient: Gay people in a sports flick? Never!
