Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Ryan Gibbons — 25 Jun 2010
Towards the end of the movie Johnny Depp says " this is it, this is the one they'll remember me for" well not being a big fan of Tim Burton I can say that this is the film that I will remember him for, Ed Wood is his masterpiece.
I have seen many modern black and white films but this movie is the most beautiful black and white movie I have ever seen truly a tribute to movies of the era. The acting is pretty close to flawless, Martin Landau is absolutely brilliant when I really got into the film it was hard to believe that I was watching Landau and not Bela Lugosi.
Johnny Depp is almost always great and in this film there is no exception he really captures the blissfully unaware side of Ed Wood, I did not like Sarah Jessica Parker but that was really the only performance I did not care for.
Watching this film I started to think of my desire to make movies and tell stories however seeing Ed Wood fail over and over again really showed me how hard it really is to make it in the business, There are many cleverly hidden messages in this film along with some great directing from Tim Burton.
Ed Wood is truly original it is not your typical bio-pic, it is the story of a person and the people around him it is certainly a memorable movie.
