Review of Ed Wood (1994) by George W — 29 Jul 2011
One of Tim Burton's classically styled, perfectly casted works of utter genius. Following Edward Scissorhands' blatant charm and honesty Burton called back Depp and the almost maddeningly perfect use of black and white color schemes to create something just short of the status Edward Scissorhands has. Burton's individuality in character development and cheese-ball laughs played out without a hitch and managed to brighten the deathlike atmosphere of Edward D. Wood Jr.'s pathetic life. This was a glove for Tim Burton's wacky hand.
The heart of the film relied mostly on Johnny Depp and his accomplices; Martin Landau and Bill Murray. The trio were a laugh and a half with their quirks and instant old-school suave. (Props to Landau for the Oscar cred!) The magical chemistry Depp managed with every actor opposite him was to die for, and frankly, was beyond my imagination. How that man does it, we'll never know.
Without making a dramatic biopic, the essence of Ed Wood Jr. was still captured within his most important works and acquaintances. The film never lost sight of what Wood believed; all of his passions and inspirations; all of his hopes and goals. The rooted story-line only managed to make the film more noteworthy and absolutely hilarious. Where most directors, writers and actors would settle for campy and cheesy, this brilliant group brought talent and devotion (even if it was for a weird and magnificent end result).
Overall, a must see film for everyone with a soft-spot for a fantastic movie.

[Bela Lugosi answers the door on Halloween night wearing his Dracula costume].
Children: Trick or treat!
[At the sight of Dracula, all but one little boy scream and run away].
Bela Lugosi: Aren't you scared, little boy? I'm going to drink your blood!
Little boy: You're not a real vampire. Those teeth don't frighten me.
[Bela looks puzzled. Ed Wood appears next to him in the doorway].
Edward D. Wood, Jr.: How 'bout these?
[Pulls out his entire row of front teeth].
Edward D. Wood, Jr.: [Little boy screams and runs away].
Bela Lugosi: Hey... How d'you do that?
Edward D. Wood, Jr.: Dentures!
[Holds them up].
Edward D. Wood, Jr.: Lost my pearlies in the war!
