Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Acinom N — 05 Apr 2012
It would take a Burton/Depp combo to tell the story of the worst filmmaker (and transvestite) of all time, Edward D. Wood Jr. He is most famous aside from his Angora fetish for making Plan 9 From Outer Space, that has been hailed as the worst movie ever. But I have to admit, I love watching Wood's films after seeing this movie. Of course the real scene stealer in this is the phenomenal Martin Landau, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the aging Bela Lugosi. Rick Baker and his team did an incredible job with the make up. Filming it in black and white only added to the charm. With great performances by Depp, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jeffery Jones, and Bill Murray, I was most delighted to see Tim Burton's one time companion and muse, Lisa Marie in a speaking role. She embodied every aspect of Vampira. But the props go to Landau. He went as far as trying to use a Hungarian accent while at the same time trying to hide the accent as Lugosi did in his later life.
A very underrated film. My only problem was the lack of a Danny Elfman score. But Howard Shore did an excellent job with his use of classic sci fi horror sound, especially with the use of a rare instrument known as the theremin. If you get the DVD be sure to watch the bonus features. You'll learn so much.
And again, a VERY MUCH DESERVED Oscar for Landau. Who knew Bela had such a potty mouth?
