Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Matt R — 24 Aug 2010
Tim Burton brings us the true story of the worse director of all time, Edward D. Wood Jr.. Johnny Depp steps into the shoes (high heel ones at that) of Wood, one of the oddest characters to ever be on screen.
I believe that Depp drew alot of inspiration from his portrayal of Wood when he was met with the task of becoming this generations Willy Wonka. Both characters have alot of the same twitches and mannerisms that put them dangerously close to that line between sane and crazy.
Definitely the best part of this movie was Martin Landau's portrayal of the late and great Bela Lugosi. The Oscar he won was much deserving and he just shows me that you can watch a mediocre movie and find a jem of a performance within.
His take on Lugosi was, to me, very similar to Willem Dafoe's extraordinary portrayal of Max Schreck a.k.a. Nosferatu in the 2000 film 'Shadow of the Vampire'. Both actors stood out and seemed unworldly among their so-so counterparts.
I think you need to see this film for the simple fact of Landau himself. I tried to watch a couple of Ed Wood's actual movies like 'Bride of the Monster' and 'Plan 9 From Outer Space', and I think that they aren't good, but not nearly "worse director of all time" worthy.
Uwe Boll ('House of the Dead', 'Bloodrayne', 'In the Name of the King') 100% deserves that title and I demand a recount.
