Review of Ed Wood (1994) by Amanda C — 11 Jul 2011
Tim Burton is a much more talented filmmaker than Ed Wood. However it's clear to see that Burton loved the films of Ed Wood. Wood is certainly an interesting subject, probably more so than any of his films, and Burton does a good job of lovingly portraying his life and love for the cinema.
Here we have vintage Depp playing an off centre, quirky but loveable lead surrounded by a solid supporting cast. The performances are all highly stylized, but so is the film, giving the whole thing a throwback feel.
Overall Ed Wood is enjoyable, but is missing that something to elevate it past the realm of fluff. It does, however, elevate itself above Wood's work in quality, but then his films are probably more memorable.
